BIG toys

While Gabriel's learning how to sit and play with his soft toys, Bryan is taking on the BIG ones. He has a fabulous NERF collection. Which includes this AUTOMATIC gun that fires out soft foam bullets. No need to cock the gun at all. The toys that kids nowadays get to play with can really be quite amazing. Other types of guns included in the series include ones with a laser sight and double guns. Even the bullets come in different forms, with sticky ones, rubber ones, even long ones. But of course, he gets a stern lecture about not shooting the bullets at anyone. Only at the targets.

Flu Pandemic

The WHO (World Health Organisation) has just upgraded their flu alert from a 4 to 5.

"Phase 5 is characterized by human-to-human spread of the virus into at least two countries in one WHO region. While most countries will not be affected at this stage, the declaration of Phase 5 is a strong signal that a pandemic is imminent and that the time to finalize the organization, communication, and implementation of the planned mitigation measures is short."

So far, 9 countries have officially lab confirmed 148 cases with 8 official deaths from the H1N1 virus. But these are official figures. Unofficially, it's something like 2500 with the flu and 152 attributed deaths. "Swine" flu is a misnomer. It's actually an assortment of human, avian and swine flu genetic sequences.

Interestingly, the death rate in Mexico seems to be very much higher than in the other countries affected. Some believe that it may have been around for sometime and there is a possibility of tens of thousands being affected. However, it wasn't reported until now, when the death rate started to rise. There is possibly a complicating factor of malnutrition, crowding and poor housing. Also antivirals need to be taken within hours of onset of illness in order to be effective. But the people in Mexico may not have seeked medical advice until it was too late or if at all.

We in Singapore are very much more prepared this time round after the SARS incident. Even in my clinic, all staff each wear an N95 mask and gown. Patients with flu symptoms and a travel history are immediately identified and isolated. Hopefully it's enough to at least slow down the spread of the flu.

Of note, the seasonal flu kills 250,000 people a year worldwide. But we currently have a flu vaccine to prevent this.

In contrast, the Spanish flu in 1918 and 1919 killed some 50 million people worldwide in just that year alone. The virus is also a H1N1 virus. The way it worked in theory was that it overstimulated the immune system, ultimately causing destruction of the lung tissue. Hence the people who died were young adults with strong immune systems.

Interestingly, our current flu vaccines do provide partial protection against the 1918 strain, according to tests done by the US CDC in 2006. But it's yet to be proven if current vaccines protect against the Mexico strain.

Sit!

Gabriel is 6 months already. And he can sit. Isn't he cute!

He loves sitting up and reaching for everything he can. He'd grab the remote control or Bryan's stuff and promptly try to stuff it into his mouth. He loves to look at his picture books while Bryan reads to him. He is naturally curious and keeps looking for things to play with.

Gabriel also has a high chair which he loves to sit in and watch the fishes in the fish tank. He has his meals in his chair and gets uber excited while waiting for his cereal.

He gets cuter everyday! :)

Unusual Zoo Creatures

The zoo has all the fabulous animals, like the giraffe, elephant; the big cats like tigers, lions.

But sometimes if you stop and look around you, you can find small monkeys on trees. And even little insects. Like this gorgeous spider and it's beautiful web. Even tiny little things can create such a beautiful, delicate structure. Takes my breath away.

My father is quite a naturalist. He loves nature and never hesitate to introduce us to the wonders of nature. I'm very glad he did. I know some people think of me as a bit of a princess. But I do actually enjoy going on nature hikes and especially diving. Which I miss...

I hope I manage to influence my boys to look around them and enjoy the world in all it's beauty. And to appreciate what God created for us to look after.

Hubbie's New Toy

Hubbie bought a brand new camera, the Nikon D700. These are a few of the fabulous photos he took with it. It works great in low light and bright light and it can takes multiple shots a second. Looks and sounds damn pro. Excuse my language. I just love the way the background blurs up so that the focus is on the subject of the photo.

One of these days I should learn how to take a good photo. If I can manage to work out how these SLR cameras work. Hubbie tried once to explain it to me. I got dizzy. Then there are the lenses, flashlight...

Easter

This weekend is Easter weekend. I was glad to have the time to spend with my kids and to rest... sort of anyway.

And Bryan enjoyed himself with his cousins Katelyn and Matthew especially. While Gabriel got to know Samuel a little better.

But not to forget this weekend 2 centuries ago, Christ died on the cross and rose on the third day. And in doing so he became the sacrifice that would cleanse the world from sin. And it's only through him that we can have a close personal relationship with God the Father.

Learning to Swim

This month, Bryan starts swimming lessons. His class is at the Singapore Swimming Club. And is a really good deal. He can go up to 3 times a week for only $90 a month. Each class lasts for 45 minutes and has a maximum of 8 in the class.

Bryan really enjoyed himself in class. He's not afraid of the water and he can even put his head inside to blow bubbles. And Bryan's not yet 4 years old. I'm really proud of my boy. He's happy to attend his class by himself and bravely does what the swimming coach asks. Even things like jumping into the pool.

He's just like his mommy. He loves water too.

Birthday Art

Bryan's cousin, Katelyn turns 6. She held her birthday party at an ARt Place. The kids had access to all sorts of art material, including paint and markers. Bryan painted a lion money-box and wrote a Happy Birthday card and poster to Katelyn. It was definately a very different birthday party. Very messy too. But lots of fun. There was even a gorgeous birthday cake at the end too. With butterflies and flowers. Isn't it sweet.

I realised that art is a very good way to keep kids busy. But it has to be something different, like painting ceremics or making a box. I should try that next time. Instead of using the TV to occupy my kids. Although it would be rather messy with paints and marker or even glue marks everywhere. Maybe during the school holidays, when I'm on leave...

Brothers Scrapz

I love the photos of my two boys. This set was taken by my darling hubbie. He's a great photographer.
