A Close Call

Just this Tuesday, I had an accident with a double decker SBS bus. It happened when we were both turning onto the Newton Circus round-about. I was in the 2nd lane next to the bus turning left when he must have failed to see me also turning left. His bus cut into my lane and hit my front left passenger side door. The knock was quite jarring and left a pretty big dent in the car door and damaged the left side mirror. Fortunately for me, I happened to be driving my Volvo at the time and although it looked bad on the outside, the inside of the car door had hardly a scratch.

Of course the driver of the bus said that I came into his lane, while I was very sure I stayed in the middle where I was supposed to be. Meanwhile, he insisted that if anything, I could pay up for the minor scratches his bus sustained. So I told him that I would be making a report to the insurance company and we'll take it from there. For a while there, I had started to worry about my own driving abilities. I think it was the initial shock that did it.

Thank goodness though that hubbie was the one that made the initial arrangements to go to the car workshop to have it looked at. I'm not sure what I would have done. I had managed to drive myself to work and actually open my clinic. Thank goodness it wasn't busy that morning. And hubbie was with me as well to talk to the workshop people later that afternoon. He has a very calming/soothing effect on me. I think it's because I know he'll always be there when I need him.

The Volvo workshop was quite helpful in letting us know what usually happens after that. However, the initial estimate of the repair seemed rather steep, at almost $10K. We were initially looking at claiming from the 3rd party since it now sounded to me very much like it was his fault for not looking out for me. But I guess we were going to have to wait for the insurance/lawyers to settle the problem.

So we'll be bringing the car in on Monday to have it fixed. And we'll see what happens after that. I hope we manage to get back all our claims and save hubbie's insurance rating. Since the car is registered under his name.
